So I'm scrolling through Death Note ficcage, looking for half-decent Mello/Near, when I stumble across a story about L that says in the summary, and I quote, "There's no time to fall in love, especially if you're the world's greatest detective." I snicker a little bit, and continue to read. He meets a girl named Hikari Tenshi, apparently. That's right, her name is "Light Angel" in Japanese. Oh, for the love of all that is Sue-ified... I click the link to read the full introduction, and come across this: "This story does not follow the original timeline, so please overlook anything that may seem a little AU-ish... hint, hint... in this story, Light is not Kira, nor is Misa the second Kira."
... A little AU-ish? Ahaha. Ahahahahahahahaha. This really isn't Death Note anymore, is it sweetie? If you want to write romance fiction, go for it, but don't masquerade it as fanfiction when you're really just copying physical characteristics for your new creations. I considered briefly reading more, but in the end, it was just too painful. What little I skimmed over told of a girl so sweet and kind and brilliant and humble and... eugh, sorry. Had to choke back some bile.
For what it's worth? It's not a fanfic, but this is good Mello/Near. It's smutty, be sure of that, but it's also IC and nicely tragic. Lovely.
