Unpopular Opinions: Death Note Edition

Spoilers for Chapter 58/Episode 25 under the cut

L had to die
There, I said it. L's my favorite manga character of all-time, but there's just no other way. He's brilliant, yes, and he's figured out more than anyone else in the story, but Light has such a strong headstart on him... it'd be unrealistic for L to win. The only way to continue with the story is to kill off L, and so that's what happened.

The anime sucks
I don't care if it's religious allegory - the foot-washing scene was incredibly out of character. In fact, a lot of added shit has been incredibly out of character, especially for L. It feels like reading fanfiction sometimes, and not in a good way. I'll keep watching it, of course, because it doesn't actually suck from an unbiased view. But compared to the manga? Utter bull.

The second arc is superior to the first
I miss L too, don't get me wrong, but you know what? I love Mello and Near. I love the fast-paced plot. I love all the little twists and turns. I love how close so many people come to destruction/victory so many times. It's beautiful, and every time I read it, I love it more. L makes the first arc - the story makes the second, and that just drives it so much more strongly.

Mello doesn't have girl lips
In the opening, they gave him shaded girl lips. This is simply not right. Moving on...

Black and white is more effective
I don't like the odd colorations - they make it more surreal, and when you've got a plot about a notebooks that kills people when you write in it, you need to make the world surrounding this detail painstakingly real. The stark black and white of the manga was very effective, and the subtle color tricks in the early anime episodes worked pretty nicely as well. But the recent disregard for natural palettes and textures? Cliched and distracting.

I am a poor sport
Why yes. Yes I am. Fandom: serious business.

Edited to add:Engrish by choice is the dumbest thing ever
Raito does not exist. Neither do Mero or Nia. Light, Mello, and Near, however, are all real characters. For fuck's sake, people, it's like the imbeciles that insist on calling Ed and Al Edo and Aru. I really think that if the creators wanted the characters to be named ridiculous engrish bastardizations of real words, they'd write them that way in official art and make sure they were spelled that way in the official translations. But guess what? They're LIGHT, MELLO, and NEAR! Accept it, and move on.
