rinnia: (sad)

It all feels like a bad nightmare.

If you have a ferret (and that includes you, Av, as you have to tell Sandra), read this:

We took Odie and Stitch in for their rabies and canine distemper vaccinations today. The vet said that since they hadn't reacted either of the times before, that we could now give them both shots at the same time, rather than spaced apart by two weeks as we did before. Stitch was given her shots first, then Odie. When we turned back from Odie's turn, Stitch had started swelling and turning red. Around her eyes and her nose were flame red, and her fur was standing up, letting us see the irritated skin beneath. The vet then gave her a shot of cortizone and a shot of benadryl, and she started returning to normal, albeit lethargic. She couldn't stand on her own, not even enough to move away when she needed to urinate. After half an hour or so, she was still sleepy from the medicine, but she was moving enough to drag herself over to me and grab onto my shirt with her front paws. I cradled her, and the vet said we should be safe to leave.

Half an hour later, she started vomiting.

Her first time was all liquid, but then bits of fluff came up, and she started crying out in pain each time it happened. We rushed her to the emergency animal hospital. On the way, she stopped breathing, and I had to give her rescue breathing. Thank God I had learned how to do that before. She wouldn't stay conscious, and I could barely feel her breathing after that, so I kept trying to open her mouth to get her to react and fight me off, keeping her awake. We rushed her into the hospital, and I haven't seen her since. The doctor there says she thinks that the fuzz was incidental and that the vomiting was another reaction from the vaccination. They had to knock her out to draw blood and insert an IV, and she has to stay overnight for monitoring. I just want my little Stitch to survive.

So please, if you have a ferret, DO NOT allow the vet to give them both vaccinations at once. The occurance of reactions may be rare, but when it happens, it's more horrible than you can imagine. Please please PLEASE take my advice and make sure to space their vaccinations out by at least two weeks.

And please, pray for my baby. The vet says she's doing fine. I just hope this continues and I can take her home tomorrow morning. Odie and I both miss her terribly.

oh dear. I'll certainly tell her. I hope stitch is ok. They're hardy little creatures, she'll be fine. Just keep positive.
