Why being a fan sucks sometimes

I read fanfiction. I read Gundam Wing and Fullmetal Alchemist, mainly, but I've been known to browse a Final Fantasy or two. The one type that I never ever ever read is Final Fantasy VIII. Why? Because I feel like I know the characters too well to put up with it.

It's snobbish, I know, but it's truly how I feel. Someone sent a question to my VIII FAQ asking if an article was true, and as it turns out, the "article" is a fanfiction. I only read the very beginning of it, wondering if it was any good, and very quickly it reminded me of how much I hate VIII fic.

Squall did not get Rinoa pregnant before he'd ever said "I love you." She wouldn't have let him do that, people! She loves him and is an affectionate girl, but she's not a whore. Think about how long it took them just to kiss - you think they're going to have sex anytime soon? And why wouldn't they use protection? I doubt they'd be wanting to start a family before they're married, and both of them are very intelligent people, in addition to Squall being extremely cautious. They'd be the *least* likely of the couples in FFVIII to get pregnant unexpectedly.

And presumed-dead-but-actually-has-amnesia? Not an interesting or creative plot point. I just don't see it as something that Squall would be likely to suffer from. I mean, most of his internal torment in the game came from not being able to let go of the past - him forgetting everything entirely from battle damage? No. Nonono. Laguna fell off a cliff and kept his memory; I don't think damage to a lesser degree would make Squall lose his, thank you very much.

It's not just that one fic, though. It seems like every fic I run across portrays Squall and Rinoa incorrectly. I'm sure there's good fic out there somewhere, but every time I search for it, I'm digusted by what I run across. And so, I will continue reading Heero/Duo and Ed/Al, but Squall/Rinoa will remain un-ficced for me.

Unless I write the fic myself. Because, you know, I'm conceited and think I can write them correctly. ;p

It's wierd because Final Fantasy VIII fanfiction is pretty much the only fanfiction I read. Not because I think it's good, although, fanfic in any fandom can be, but because the badness amuses me. But yeah, people's takes on Squall and Rinoa are generally the worst. I like all the wierd alternate universe stories where Squall is a prince of some kind. Whaaa?

It is rather humorous at times, which is why I managed to read as much of that fic as I did. But then came Rinoa singing a Michelle Branch song as one she had written about Squall, and I just couldn't bring myself to read anymore.

Yeah, AU is often the most amusing. In a facepalming sort of way.

Ahahahaha! Singing! That's like the time Locke wrote a poem to his love Celes. Heheheh.

My favorite weird fanfic was this one I found where Laguna was a vampire and had passed the curse onto Squall. OH NOES. Would Rinoa still love him if he were a HALF VAMPIRE?! (It's especially funny because Laguna would be the worst vampire EVER.)

Hmmm, yeah, not working for me. How in the world would someone get that idea? And why would she deem it worth writing? Ah well - one person's crap idea is another person's hilarious discovery.

I read one that would have been interesting if it had been more than two chapters about what Squall's life would have been like had he been raised by Laguna and a rather amusing one-shot where Squall was having one of those days where he wished he'd stayed in bed. He and Rinoa were married, but that was it. No kids or nothing. They were in their late twenties. Other than that, forget it. If you're willing to write one, I'd love to read it.

Now those sound like concepts that could be good if written well. I've written a few in the past that were OMGIMWRITINGFANFIC!, so I'll pretend those don't exist, and one recently that's focused entirely on Squall and Rinoa for fanfic100. When I get some time, I'll be writing more for that, so I'll post stuff then. Thanks. :)
