Recipe for Alchemic Confusion

I've recently become convinced that Heiderich is not Al's alter.

To begin, let me say that this assumes a perfect parallel universe - everyone hooks up with the same people and does that same things they would do in Amestris, just without alchemy.

Proof:
- Hughes's alter is named Hughes. Shouldn't the alter of an Elric be named Elric?
- If they really are the same people, why doesn't Alfons ever mention his Ed?
- They do look similar, but not nearly as alike as everyone else and their alters look.
- What's up with the age difference? Alfons looks *way* older than Al would've been without the gate trouble.
- Same person, different setting, right? Then why are their personalities so different?
- ... I know there was more... fak...

Anyway, so my new theory, developed in collaboration with Jaime, is this: Ed managed to look up someone named Alfons and sought him out, missing his brother. Upon seeing their uncanny resemblance, he stuck by him. They're not alters, as they're not really the same person when it comes down to it, but it was close enough to get Ed through the day.

This would also explain why Ed was so dissatisfied being with Heiderich - he wasn't really Al, so he never stood a chance of replacing him. Maybe if he'd actually been Al's alter, Ed would've been content to live out his days with him, or even thought that when he brought Al back, he'd brought him to that side with him. But as Alfons != Al, this scenario could never have happened.

Makes the story a little more tragic, even. Heiderich really never had a chance.
