rinnia: (solitary)

Why oh why did it have to end there?

I finally managed to pick up Volume 4 of Zombie Powder, so now I've read the whole (unfinished) thing. And I'm sad. I was loving it so hard for most of the volume - the Gamma/Wolfina interactions, the glimpses into Gamma's past, the hilarity of the whole zombiepowdersnow bit. Then we meet Nazna, the surgeon who can fix Emilio. And in exchange for the operation, Wolfina agrees to be her Guinea Pig for medical experimentation.

... What? No, wait, did Tite really just let one of the characters agree to be the plaything of a sadist who uses giant blades interchangably with scalpels? So now that's what I'm left with when I think of poor Wolfina, strong, vivacious, devoted to her little brother above all else, likely being cut up and having her organs toyed with for experimentation purposes. It's just so... depressing.

I wanted Gamma to fake a capture. The bounty on his head is more that enough to cover the surgery - enough to cover it many fold. I wanted to see a plan to have him captured, then take the bounty and run, busting heads the whole way out.

I wanted to see Smith calmly and coolly offer her another option.

I wanted to see Elwood scream and fight for her until something in the situation changed.

I didn't... shit, I didn't want to see her calling her mom with her hair all around her face like it's never been before in the manga, telling her she thinks Emilio will be fine too, and saying nothing about the horrors that surely await her.

I thought the abandonment of Elwood was actually really interesting, as I'm sure he wouldn't give up, and I'd love to see what happens when his path crosses Gamma's again. That twist I lapped up. Bittersweet, sure, but acceptable.

The characters were not necessarily the most generous of people, this I know, and I love them for their flaws, but still... wasn't there any other way for Wolfina's story to end?

Maybe there was. Maybe Tite had something fantastic and storyline-altering up his sleeve and he just got stopped before he could pull out that Ace. I think that's what I'll choose to believe.

So... has Tite ever talked about what might've become of Zombie Powder if it hadn't died so quickly? I'm aching for just a sliver more.
