Just thinking.

I don't know if I'll continue with NaNoWriMo. The mood's not striking me to work on one big project right now, so I'm favoring plotting out stories around snippets that have struck me, working on The Comic, and playing (a shitload of) Persona 3. For some reason, I started thinking about people's perceptions of fictional characters, and so I've decided to write up a few "facts" I made up about three of my favorites that may have little or no canon support, but that I believe in whole-heartedly.

  • She may be no artist, but Rinoa's actually intelligent, and she's a whiz with math. No one learns this until Selphie asks Squall for help on a problem (she's studying thermodynamics, specifically engines) and Rinoa joins in enthusiastically, blowing them both away. She's quick to explain that she had a personal tutor before she ran away from home. Squall asks her why she never told them about her skill, and she flippantly says that it never seemed useful.

  • Near knows Mello's real name. At some point, while briefing Aizawa about the case he'll be working on, he calmly states, "You remember his name." Aizawa's been expecting this would come up eventually and wastes no time replying simply, "Yes." There's a pause, and he can hear Near inhale uncomfortably. "It's Mihael Keehl," Aizawa offers in a solemn hush. Silence persists. Finally, Near sighs, "Thank you," and resumes rattling off the case information as if he had never stopped.

  • As soon as she's sure Emilio is safe where no one will bother him (back with the Doctor who cared for them both, I'd imagine), Wolfina sets out once more. It isn't hard for her to track Gamma - he's never been known for his sublety, but the gossip stories she hears seem almost like they were planted just for her. The hints, as heavily cloaked as they are, are there, and she pieces them together, trailing him excitedly. When she does find him, she suppresses her joy and in her most threatening voice shouts out, "Hey! Give me back my hair ribbon!"

I've considered writing one-shot fics for the first two ideas before, and I still might. I'm torn as to whether the last merits a lengthy telling or stands better as that little snippet. Ah well. I suppose I'm not on any deadline with this stuff. I can contemplate the options as long as I'd like.

    Selphie: Find the X? WTF?
Rinoa: Here it is! *draws an X on Irvine's forehead*
    Rinoa: But seriously, it's 45.6492.
    Selphie: Your IQ!
    Irvine: ...leave me alone!

Yep! The sprite's from FF Anthology - on the loading screen for VI, a random sprite would come out and run around, and one of them was Squall. I know, it's so weird to see a little laughing Squall sprite!
