this means war
never have i seen something as morally wrong in the world of video games as this.
the original legend of zelda revolutionized gaming with its trying puzzles, action/rpg hybridized gameplay, and brilliantly different second quest. the games that have followed have all been unique in their own rights as well, with "a link to the past" on the snes standing out as a phenomenal game with or without its royal lineage. in short, link is the ultimate representation of what video gaming is and should always be: unique, entertaining, and powerful despite all elf-like appearances.
that is one half of why cloud's victory is blasphemous. the other is the fact that cloud, and also in the following sephiroth by the same right, shouldn't have made it into the final 10, more or less the final two.
for one thing, the choosing of characters is extremely biased. three characters from ff7 and three from ff10 flood the competition, whereas 8 has one entry (squall), 6 has one (kefka), and 9 and the older games (sans 6) are not recognized at all! for fairness, one character at max from a final fantasy should be allowed. hell, peach's excellent run within mario games didn't earn her a spot, so why should one moderately good rpg for the playstation only be granted three?
this brings me to my biggest problem with this matter: ff7 is not as great as everyone seems to think. stop, ff7 fans, and listen to me; i have played parts of 4, 5, 9, and tactics, and have beat 6, 7, 8, and 10, as well as chrono trigger and numerous non-square rpgs. i do know what i'm talking about.
ff7, while it is a good and enjoyable game, is nowhere near as fantastic as a large portion of the online gaming community would have you believe. it is rife with translation errors, plot holes, cliched dialogue, and stereotyped characters. how long can you stand barret's ebonics without wondering how he could even comprehend what shinra is doing? barbie doesn't actually move because her exaggerated breasts and miniscule waist, which cater to a chauvinistic and unrealistic world view of beauty, would not allow her to walk upright with real world physics. yet somehow, tifa not only walks, but also runs, climbs, and fights, all without any supportive bra as far as i can tell.
the plot is mediocre, but overall is not anything to write home about, especially considering that it is from a final fantasy game. maybe it was better in japanese, but in english, it's simplistic on paper yet convoluted in the telling. i cannot tell you how many comments and reviews i have read by ff7 fans who did not catch the truth about sephiroth and his lineage. play it again, folks; you're missing the point.
as far as gameplay goes, it is fun. the accessory/materia set up is not as unlimited as the junction system from 8 or the esper system from 6, but it still lets you customize your characters. overall, i did like the game. some of the characters, namely vincent, had intriguing backstories, and i did find myself rooting against all odds that cloud and aeris would find love and live happily ever after. myself, it's not the game that truly bugs me.
it's the fans that blindly love it because it was most likely their first rpg, or at least their first on the playstation. look at the game for what it is, and like it, but stop trying to pass it off as the greatest game of all time. frankly, it is not, and never could be. not while link, mario, samus, and megaman are around and new classics keep rising into the gaming world everyday, at least.
to everyone who voted cloud over link, i say that you are welcome to your opinion, and if you just liked the character of cloud better, go for it. however, if you voted based on the actual games and not a personality preference, shame on you. recognize the incredible things that the legend of zelda did for all games after it, or get off of gamefaqs.
harsh, yes, but that's my opinion, slightly embittered and aggravated at the moment to a more frantic pitch. bottom line: 7 is fine, but zelda rules the gaming world, like it or not.
*green coloring fades and she shrinks back to normal size* in other news, i've been marathoning ff9. i finished the first disc at four this morning, and the thumb is aching to get back to work.
i shall go find a faq for the chocobo hot and cold game, then return to playing. that little baby's tough! -.-;;;
