Fly-by update!
I called Apple Support on a Monday, got the shipping box and sent the laptop off on Tuesday, and got it back fixed and spotlessly cleaned with new topcase and battery on Thursday. Apple, you rock.
My mom's out of the hospital and having fun with her hardcore meds (linezolid) for the methicillin AND vancomycin resistant staph infection she got in a spider bite on her stomach. It was all very startling and yikes-inducing. And somehow, Joe's idiotic ex thinks this happened because the house is dirty. Which it isn't. She also apparently thinks Dommie could get sick from the house's "filth". I hate her so.
If I could, I would adopt this poor baby in a heartbeat. His story just destroys me. I hope he gets a loving home soon.
