time off and dealing with beavers, footballs, and little lost laptops

so. i'm finally here at caltech. *cheering and celebration ensues* i have a room in hell hall in blacker house for right now, though rotation starts tonight to determine my permanent home. i must say, despite the trademark heat here in hell, i rather like the room i have now. must keep this in mind while viewing the other houses and their rooms.

... just got back from lunch at baja fresh with steve, eliot, and jon. they knocked on my door and basically said, "k, we're going now. come along." thus i did. 'twas fun. it's now 2:42pm. we stopped in a used video game store along the way and i saw sims *double* deluxe (with sims, livin' large, and house party) for $39. am now tempted.

i am sick of crude jokes at the expense of out mascot. especially from charlie's angels 2, which was every bit as bad as it looks. "you were the cock? i was the beaver!"

make it stop.

anyway... the club fair was yesterday, and it had a wonderful carnival accompanying it. steve won a little nerf-style football from a game, and so he and jon were walking around throwing it. besides the part where jon waited around the corner and tried to hit me with it when i walked around, it was fun. until the little football was lost. jon encouraged steve to attempt to throw it over an archway, and so he did. the football cleared it easily, but we never saw it come down on the other side.

we found it this morning about 20 feet off the ground in a tree. the other football they were tossing around later suffered a similar fate in a different location. poor things.

and finally, the reason i have not written in so long:
mom and i drove the 9 hours to caltech with many of my belongings (not all, due to lack of a permanent room assignment). among them was my laptop case, containing about a dozen cds of pictures, music, movies, and written files, my pocket pc, and the laptop itself. at about 11:30pm on that first night, after mom was on her way back home, i finally went to my room to settle down for the night. i began looking for my pocket pc to set an alarm for the next morning.

that's when i realized my case wasn't there.

i ran out to the payphone in my pajamas and robe at about midnight to frantically call my mom and explain what had happened. she told me to look again and call her back if i couldn't find it. i searched in the grass where we unloaded, squinted at all the shadowy shapes in hell hall, and tore apart my room looking for the sacred black canvas bag. all to no avail.

thankfully, when i called her back, she had reached into the backseat and found that it was still sitting in there, apparently forgotten through all of the moving. long story short (or something like that), she ups'ed it to me. that in itself was another struggle involving office overcrowding, incompetant workers in the actual warehouse, and the borrowing of an official post office trolley without any sort of documentation. fun stuff. the conclusion is, i now have my laptop, all patched and critical updated, and it is running on the beautiful t1 connection that caltech provides.

so. if anyone is curious, i do have a new e-mail address: rinoa@caltech.edu. it makes me happy. rotation starts tonight, classes start tomorrow, and i have moved on into the newest phase in my life.

hello college.

Re: well

[identity profile] rinnia.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
it did take 9 hours. though, it ended up being a little longer because we stopped frequently for snacks and the like.

mmmm, in and out burger...

How could you forget your most expensive [I'm guessing] items you own in the car. With all that brain power you still manage do the same things that i would...

Not gellous of your t1 though, it will be a year but, I will have a t3 connection at tmcc.

[identity profile] rinnia.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
i guess it just got put under things in the car, to hide it from outside eyes, especially since we drove in a rented pt cruiser, and then we both just kinda spaced it.

i have it now, though, and i love the t1. *huggles her laptop and ethernet cable*

[identity profile] draconox.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
meh... cable is good for me. :)

and do either of you have wireless networks available to you? our library is supposed to be wireless, but i tried to use it today and it didn't work....

[identity profile] rinnia.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
we have wireless in one of our libraries, but not the other... um... four. i haven't tried it out yet, though.

are you sure your laptop has a wireless card? if not, that *might* be why it doesn't work...

[identity profile] draconox.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
it BETTER have a wireless card. we paid extra to get one.
