i have something to say.
the responses i got from senators reid and ensign regarding my e-mail about the proposed amendment to make same-sex marriage illegal are, as per usual, factless prepackaged drivel. neither one of them seemed to take any note of the fact that i was not writing to support their views. neither one of them told me just how it is that same-sex marriage would threaten the "sanctity" of marriage or "weaken" it. in fact, no one seems to have any real ideas on how that would happen. just sounds good, i guess. oh yes, and nevermind britney spears getting hitched and then annulling it just as quick, not to mention any of numerous quickie weddings that happen in las vegas everyday, or reality shows that marry off people who hardly know each other based on who will give them the best publicity and have the nicest o-face in bed. these things are precious. they show us the sanctity and seriousness of marriage in the united states. god forbid two people who are in love, have been living together for years, and take care of each other as much as the law will allow them to want simple recognition and rights. it is unthinkable that they would want the tax benefits given to redneck men who produce inbred children with their beautiful blushing cousins. it is inhuman that if one of them was injured, the other would want to see him or her and be involved the same way a spouse is in a heterosexual couple. and it is beyond unbelievable that these people want legal parenting recognition for children that they both raise. even though there is no psychological or sexual corruption connected with upbringing by two homosexual parents as opposed to heterosexual ones, we just can't let these people operate in society like the normal human beings they are.
on one final note, anyone who has seen the oklahoma ad saying that homosexual marriage willingly deprives children the valuable condition of having a mother and a father should be disgusted, supporter of gay marriage or not. i myself was raised by just a mother. my father was never there when they were married. i hardly noticed any difference in day-to-day life when he moved out. i'd like to think that i turned out just fine, despite this supposed "handicap" of not really having a father. this claim that they make insults not only homosexual couples, but any single parent in this country, and i for one am appalled. don't they even think about what they're saying anymore, or has homophobia blinded them to all else but oppressing that which they don't understand? or maybe they mean to include single parenting as well. after all, being biased against people based purely on sexual orientation is just as illogical as bashing someone because they want to raise a child without being married to someone of the opposite sex.
pass on these arguments to the senators in your state. copy and paste them, if you want. it is insanity to let this go on any longer. slavery was abolished, women fought for their rights, and now it's time to break down the next cruel prejudice.
homophobia or not, recognize how foolish this sort of legal prejudice is. it doesn't matter how you personally feel - what matters is the recognition that the government should not be able to tell us we can't live. interracial marriage was shunned at first, too. let history repeat itself. overcome this mindblock and realize how foolish this is.
vote against the amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.
thank you for your time.
