What a day!
The car's been acting kind of funky lately - shuddered while driving a couple days ago, wouldn't turn over until the fourth try or so at Publix yesterday, just generally sounding clanky and uneven. Plus, the "Check Engine Soon" light came on. Jaime checked the battery, and after finding that it was normal and reading about the symptoms online, theorized that there was something wrong with the crankshaft position sensor. We had originally been planning to spend today inside, hiding for the masses gathered for the UTenn game, but instead, we headed over to Pep Boys to get the system codes read. We walked to a Joann Fabrics and looked around for a bit, then headed back and waited to hear some news. Turns out Jaime's research lead him to the right conclusion - it was, in fact, the crankshaft position sensor that was faulty. The good news was that they had the part in stock and everything together - diagnostics, labor, and parts - would only be $170 or so. The bad news? It wouldn't be ready until 5 or 6. We first dropped the car off at 1.
Luckily, the mall is less than a mile from that Pep Boys, and so we set out for victuals and merriment! We stopped along the way at a strip of stores including Petco, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Borders. There were many, many adorable ferrets at the Petco that I played with for a long time (and for the rest of the day, I smelled faintly of ferret) and some cute snakelets creeping about their cages that made for fun watching. Continuing on, we split a plate of bourbon chicken and vaguely oriental veggies and noodles at the mall, then wandered about the stores. Since we had plenty o' time to kill, I finally did something I've been wanting to do for a while - I had some make-up done at Sephora. I got the Candy-Colored Eyes Express Service (which isn't listed on their site right now, but then again, it is pretty new) and it. Was. Awesome. Somehow, I managed to snag the one male make-up artist in there, and he helped me pick out colors I liked and that would work well, then put some primer and them all on in a flash and did black eyeliner to boot. I walked out rocking sparkly pink-silver-purple eyes. Fantastic. I didn't buy anything today - another perk: I wasn't pressured to spend money at all - but I may just have to spring for ol' #24 there. As an all-over base color and top sparkle, it worked wonders. Whee, girly!
After that, we walked about the mall a bit more, then headed back to Borders for cold drinks and some very inside-joke-y Hangman. We lounged about there until it was just about 6, then headed back to Pep Boys. Our walk back was a bit interesting - we passed a police car driving up onto the sidewalk, as well as a transport truck with a battered cop car on the back and lots of strewn about broken plastic. Not sure what happened there. It was a bit freaky. Anyway, we made it back safely, and wonder of wonders, our car was waiting outside for us, the bill was just as quoted, and the result was excellent. I don't think I've ever heard/felt the car run that smooth. Thanks, Pep Boys!
Before heading home, we took a quick detour to Michaels, racing to beat the clock. Y'see, by that point, the big UF/UTenn game was almost over, and we very much didn't want to get stuck in traffic. Still, my Michaels coupons were set to expire, and really, what's more important: getting home in five minutes instead of fifteen, or obtaining crafty goodness and coupons for next week? I think you see my point. I picked up a nifty little pendant, the style of which reminds me greatly of the cover of House of Leaves (which may or may not be the main reason I got it), and for Jaime, we snagged a little cross-stitch kit. No frame just yet, but those are cheaper at Joann anyway. When we got out, the road had started to bustle a bit - a strange and strong contrast to the eerie emptiness we'd witnessed earlier - but wasn't crowded enough to slow down much at all. We breezed home.
And as a bonus, UF won the game. Like I said, what a day.
