Compare/Contrast

La la la, double work, la la la, a bit of academic unrest, la la la, extreme family drama...

Let's focus on fluffier things, shall we?

Is anyone on my flist a drugstore beauty aficionado? I have a mascara dilemma. See, my lashes are fairly long and dark as is, but they're pin straight and I dislike eyelash curlers. My ideal mascara would be something that excels at curling, lengthens and darkens only moderately, and is waterproof. For years now I've sworn by Sky High Curves, but it appears that it's being discontinued. Woe. Right now, I'm using Sexy Curves as a replacement. It does alright, but it's not a perfect swap. For some reason, it feels slicker than Sky High Curves, and it seems to dry very slowly, making it difficult if I feel like layering for a dramatic effect. It also rehydrates a lot when my eyes water, which is something that happens often. And it doesn't come off completely with my face wipes. If I wear more than just a touch at the tips, I end up with black smudges under my eyes the next day. Anyway, my point is, Sexy Curves was the best suggestion my research could offer me for a suitable replacement, but it's just not suitable. Any recommendations?

I've had this idea for a P4 kind-of-fanfic-kind-of-not that I've been kicking around for a while. Just the other day, someone requested pretty much my concept at the kink meme. I sat flabbergasted for a moment, breaking out into indignant wails only when someone absolutely pounced on the prompt. My fault for not making time to write it, I know. It's still disheartening. On the plus side, not only is the writer making a fun piece with it, but it's in a somewhat different format from what I was planning, and both the tone and the actual plot of it are way different from my idea. So. Hope! *goes back to not learning her lesson and not working on it at all*

There's some part of me that really wants to watch Flight of the Conchords, and some part that believes I never can. It's been recced to me a lot by various people, ranging from my immediate family to a complete stranger on a plane, most often based on the fact that I love The Mighty Boosh. That's actually why I'm hesitant. I mean, I adore Boosh. The odds of FotC, however fantastic it may be, living up to those expectations are pretty slim. There's also the fact that it hits a bit close, what with the whole pair-of-zookeepersshepherds-cum-musical-duo performing funny ditties thing, the BBC radio series background, and the "annoying at first" quote. I'm trying to push all that aside so I can love it on its own merits. I just wish everyone would stop comparing it to Boosh when hyping it up to me. Not helping.

Target's jewelry selection has gone massively downhill in the past year or so. Add onto that the hit-or-miss nature of Hot Topic's stock and the crazy prices of just about everything unique online, and I'd been in a bit of an accessories slump. Except for HT bow clips. Those things are deliciously awesome. Anyway, I found a solution - Michaels! Armed with my black lobster clasp cord and a baggie of split rings, I can turn any random pendant into a simple necklace. Blue Moon beads makes a lot of pretty things - I'm especially fond of the Manor House and Lost & Found lines. Plus, when you buy from Michaels, you get a coupon for a discount during the week after. If you stay up on your purchases and limit yourself to only as many things as you have coupons for, you can get into a cycle where you never pay full price. $3 necklaces are just about the best type, I'd say.

One thing Michaels doesn't have, however, is open coil stitch markers. Rather annoyingly, they do have another type of Wrights/Boye stitch markers and a kit that includes a box of open coil ones. As you can probably tell from the link, though, I did find them for pretty cheap online. I'm holding out until we have something else to order from Amazon that I can just throw them in with. Personally, I like the open coil ones because they're pretty smooth, thus unlikely to split the yarn or snag it, and very secure, so I don't worry about marking a handful of stitches and then jamming the piece in my bag. I know they'll all still be in place when I drag it back out. You know it says bad things about your crafting speed, however, when you want to buy new stitch markers because your entire box is busy holding stitches in unfinished projects. Eh heh.

I don't really have any comparing/contrasting to do with the plague. I just wanted to point out this news and add that apparently one of my professors knew the guy. He had... darkly comic things to say about him. But seriously, the plague. I think my prof said this is the first death from the plague in 40 years. Crazy stuff.

See, that just makes me more torn! On the one hand, their whole intro about imposters makes me think of the Boosh episode "The Power of the Crimp", where two guys go by the name The Flighty Zeus, steal their look and dynamic, and become more popular than them by performing songs that Boosh wrote - including one called Future Sailors. Yeah. But on the other hand, that was really funny! And the actual song content was very unique!

Auuuuugh, so conflicted.

How's South Korea so far? Any more love hotel hijinks?
