Jaime's in limbo for scans, and we all know what that means. Time for me to ruminate on the latest installments of things I like and why they suck now!

... Okay, that's a bit harsh. Not all of them suck now.

Anyway, Smashing Pumpkins! This whole "reunion" is kind of bullshit no matter what, and Zeitgeist isn't anywhere near as good as the original stuff (this coming from a girl who thinks "Adore" is their best CD, no less). I have to say, though, that the American Gothic EP was a pleasant surprise. It's good. It's really good. The Rose March in particular is epic, but the whole thing is 17 packed minutes of great music. That combined with Song for a Son really got my hopes up. I was skeptical about this whole Teargarden idea, but... yeah... the first track is excellent. Like, on par with some of their older stuff for me. Then came Widow Wake My Mind.

Ugh. Back to Earth. It's not that it's a bad song, because it's not. It's just that it's... not... good. Specifically, the song structure is too repetitive, the vocals are just annoying, and the drumming, while proficient, is boring. Jimmy's gone, and even if I hadn't known that beforehand, I would've been able to tell. It's that dull. I'm sure the new kid is a fantastic drummer on his own, and he's no slouch within the Pumpkins (if you can even still call the band that when it's more like "Billy Corgan and the Ego Trips"), but there's no there there. It's like he's stymied by his own accomplishment - like being recruited into the band has robbed him of the balls to insert any personality into his drumming. He drums rhythms, and that's about it. Of course, this is only one song. It's highly possible that the next one will blow everything out of the water, and my faith will be restored. I'm not counting on it, but it's a possibility. We'll see.

On the plus side, Rock Band and SP forums lead to Jaime's and my discovery of Silversun Pickups a while ago, and I'm obsessed. Now that is some fantastic music. All of it's good, but I'd especially recommend the acoustic set that's floating around. Rusted Wheel acoustic is fucking amazing.

Mighty Boosh! It's hard to be my favorite show - there's a lot of love, but a lot of expectations. The Future Sailors tour did not live up. Much like with Widow Wake My Mind above, it's not that it's bad. I liked it a lot when I first saw it, actually. It's that it's so much less than it should be; it's so far below par that it's, well, not funny. Rewatching it, I noticed just how little of a story there is. Compare that to the first show, where there were plenty of humorous asides and fake theater mishaps, but they almost all occurred within the framework of the plot. Future Sailors, on the other hand, only has a plot for half of the second act. That's it. That's the best part of the show, actually. Vince is still too mean to Howard for my tastes, but at least it's funny. Before Sunflash shows up, it's downright hilarious. Sunflash is also pretty funny, for that matter. I can approve of his addition. What I'm more bothered by is how the first act pretty much consists of milking laughs from the audience based purely on character recognition.

I hate it when entertainment becomes self-aware. It's like when the Project Runway designers applauded Tim Gunn saying "Make it work!" at the start of... the fifth season, I think. Jaime and I winced. The charm is in observing characters you love doing the things they do, not in said characters feeding you what you want to see with a wink and a nudge. Yes, Tony Harrison always declared things an outrage, but it was never a non-sequitur exclamation. When he's saying it because he knows it'll make you laugh, it's not funny anymore. Bob Fossil teaching the audience dance moves was amusing, but was it amusing because he was teaching the audience or because we were watching him dance? How much funnier could it have been if there'd been a reason he was dancing outside of "because that's what Fossil does"? This is where creativity comes in. I know they're capable of crafting amusing plots - the series and the previous live show prove it. This iteration was just lazy, and frankly? I expected better. I'm a little concerned that, based on the lack of activity and the lack of creativity when active lately, the Boosh is dead. I hope I'm wrong. I don't think I am, but I hope.

No More Heroes! First off, NMH2 does not suck. It's not the incredible-improvement-in-virtually-every-aspect sequel that many media outlets seem to think it is, but it is a fantastic game. No lj-cut - I'm going to keep this mostly spoiler-free.

The first big difference you notice is the graphics. Stylistically, they're close to the previous game, but they're both more detailed and cleaner. The palette in this game is breath-taking - lots of deep, heavy tones without feeling too shadowy or muddy. The battle graphics in particular are just about perfect. When fighting, the enemies get thrown around and slashed with glowing streaks in alarmingly pleasant ways. It's a violent visual feast. No complaints there. The cast is pretty strong, too. A lot of familiar faces show up, including a couple that really caught me off guard and a couple others that are playable, and the new assassins as a whole are just as appealing and uniquely psychotic as their predecessors. My only real complaint about the cast is that I would've liked to have seen a couple of them reappear at multiple points in the game instead of the standalone instances they showed up. Not a big problem, really. Just a nitpick.

Nah, the big problem is actually the thing that all the reviewers seem to love - the lack of an overworld. Gone are the long sessions of biking or hoofing about town, trying to find just where your job/mission is while kicking dumpsters and collecting Lovikov balls on the way. Lots of people seem to consider the previous world map nothing more than a time-consuming nuisance and find the new system of simply selecting where you'd like to go and appearing there stream-lined to perfection. I don't. I think the new system is just not fun. Having to drive to a job every time you'd like to try it was annoying, true, but a big chunk of the first game's charm was tooling around on your ridiculous motorcycle and exploring Santa Destroy. We liked randomly hitting pedestrians and stumbling across new shirts. Was it necessary? Nah, but it was fun! I can't really complain about adding the ability to teleport straight to missions, but couldn't they have given the option to ride around town if you want to? It doesn't have to be a requirement, and in fact the game is probably better without it being one, but I maintain that having it as an option would've been nice.

And no matter how fun the new mini-games are, I will never forgive them for subjecting my perfectionist mind to the Strength Training. Talk about a challenge. I kept at it until I beat them all, and in retrospect, it really didn't take me too many tries, but in the moment? So frustrating! Fat Jeane is nothing but love, though. Kitty exercising! :D

Persona 4! Okay, so there's nothing new there. I just wish there was. In the spirit of P3P and all the new features they added to that, I'd like to present "What I want to see in a P4 remake":
- Picking the gender of the MC. Natch.
- Dating both genders. It's been too long since Tatsuya and Jun. That level of freedom needs to return.
- Matchmaking. I know plenty of people wanted to see Kanji and Naoto hook up, and I personally would like to nudge Chie and Yukiko towards a different sort of close relationship. Didn't you ever play matchmaker for your friends in high school? It just makes sense.
- Changeable battle outfits. Surely Yosuke could hide some stuff in a breakroom for you guys to grab before heading into the TV. I want maid costumes for the girls and the boys!
- More missions! Am I the only person who adores those things? They're just too few and far between.
- Variable main plot conversations. It would be great if there were little changes here and there to reflect your social link status with people. Think the random conversations in empty dungeon rooms, but scattered throughout main plot scenes.
- Hmmm... I'm blanking... well, if I think of more later, I'll throw 'em on.

Still twenty minutes until I can expect Jaime back, and then he has to start drinking contrast and we wait until his next scan at 2:30. Sigh. Distractions, distractions...

Dream at Tempo 119 is like the most bitchin' song ever. <3

What a weird week this has been.

Last week started out alright. I can't remember much of it, but I do remember that I was pretty pleased with my midterms. Then there was group drama. Forcing school away for a bit, Jaime and I unwound by making slightly belated sugar skulls for El Dia de Los Muertos (which I may post pictures of, if I'm ever motivated and emotionally stable enough at the same time). But the day after I made a skull in Odie's honor, Stitch died. So I spent a lot of time crying, over her and over school and over everything in general. Add onto that some health issues (nothing serious, but annoyances - GI + girly + mental - add up, y'know?), and I was in a pretty sorry state.

Then a strange thing happened.

I slept. Okay, so that wasn't good as it sounds at first blush - one of the medications I got put on disagreed with me pretty strongly, and I spent the weekend nauseous and dizzy and so tired I could barely drag myself around the apartment. Needless to say, I stopped taking the drug (and haven't told my doctor yet - I will, I will! Jeez.). At this point, I think it's pretty much out of my system. Somehow, coming off of that, even with some lingering group drama (though there's a spark of hope there that appeared earlier today I'm absolutely giddy about) and health monitoring (again, nothing serious - this one was actually left up to me as to whether I wanted it or not, because the doctor doesn't think there's anything wrong, but anxiety makes me craaaaaaaazy, so I went for it. So far? Nothing wrong.), I'm almost energized. Yeah, life can suck sometimes, and I really want more than anything to just be healthy and have everyone I love be healthy too, but nothing's ever perfect. You have to take what beauty you can from the quiet moments and hope that the chaos ends in your favor.

Well, and sometimes you have to not be a pretentious twat and just have light-hearted fun.

...

And on to the light-hearted fun!

Having a Jaime is also a wonderful thing, especially one who's replaying No More Heroes, as are dark lagers, hard salamis, and cheddar. I happen to have all of them to boogie with tonight. I feel blessed, no lie, no sarcasm.

Ugh. Being happy's kind of exhausting. But there's no time for rest! Gotta get as much in as I can before it's back to the lab tomorrow!

That's right, it's your Friday fix of fun, frivolous... frivolity. I lost it. Fuck... heeeeey, and it's back again! Fwhoo hoo!

To watch: Love him or hate him, Jimmy Fallon has one truly hilarious bit - Head Swap. The previous installments are all funny and worth a watch, but they really outdid themselves with the most recent one. Christian Bale's head on Sandra Bullock's body; what will that kooky bunch think up next?

To read: I sincerely doubt there's anyone reading this who needs Penny Arcade recced to them. Regardless, you may not have seen today's strip, and if so, well that's just too tragic for me to bear. My identification with Tycho grows ever stronger.

To play: Canabalt. One button. One level. No mistakes allowed. This is the sort of thing that you can waste hours on if you're not careful - it's easy to pick up and impossible to beat. My best score so far is 3480. Addictive.

And because I don't feel like making an entirely separate post for this, when I saw the losing dress on Project Runway this week (note: in case you couldn't tell, that link contains massive spoilers for last night's episode), I could only think of one thing...

Mary is being amazing and giving Jaime and me sooooo much stuff to take with us when we move. Kitchen tools, cleaning supplies, towels, a little sound system... I am bowled over. Absolutely stunned and grateful. We're going to have such a nice little start - here's hoping life just gets better and better.

I spilled my little jar of Goth Juice earlier. Not all of it, thankfully, but a fair amount. Sigh. I guess I needed to invest in a full-size one soon anyway.

And now, the main feature: I think Jaime stole my slash goggles. Observe.

Me: Oh whoa, I just realized something.
Jaime: What?
Me: Vince mentions that he and Howard crimp in their room in the nighttimes.
Jaime: And?
Me: Their room! This means they share a room!
Jaime: Of course they do. I don't think Naboo's place has enough space for them to have their own rooms. Anyway, they slept together on the floor of their shack in the first season. Why wouldn't they share a room?
Me: ... *torn between shame and UTTER AWE*

I've been reading House of Leaves and loving it to bits, both the plot and the form. You can read it pretty much straight through if you'd like and I think it would still be excellent, but I'm really enjoying trying to decipher everything and find hidden messages. If you'd rather find out this stuff for yourself, skip this cut ).

I also love this: #adamincognito. The basic gist is that Adam Savage from Mythbusters attended ComicCon today in full costume and no one managed to figure out it was him. He's been giving hints as to what he's dressed as, and he'll be doing it again tomorrow to give everyone another chance. I'm betting he's a Rorschach. We'll find out tomorrow, I suppose.

One of the best things about becoming obsessed with Boosh (in my eyes, at least) is that I've gained a lot of confidence when it comes to fashion. I figure, if Noel can wear all those crazy clothes well and with pride, why can't I? Being a girl, I should have it even easier than him! So. Yeah. It's led to me looking at sites like this one a lot (which happens to have a companion cosplay site that includes this dress. Fuck. YES.). The blouses! They call to me! I figure I'll either save so I can buy custom fitted ones that'll last a long time or work on my sewing skills until I can fabricate such goodies with my own hands. Then maybe I could develop the necessary construction chops to make vests and jackets as well. The possibilities are endless, I say! Endless!

Speaking of Booooosh, I am SUCH a happy fangirl. While I'm at it, these two older interviews are also excellent, and whether you're a Boosh fan or not, Sweet is always worth a watch. Earlier today, I was musing on the presence of slashy hints in everything Julian and Noel do together. Jaime tried to present Nathan Barley as a counter-example, but I went into full-on slash goggles mode and cited evidence. He actually said, "Yeah, I guess you're right about that." For the record, there is one exception that has no shipping fodder I can find - AD/BC. (Un)natural Acts is a bit on the sparse side as well, but there are a couple fonts of love that keep it from being barren.

Can you tell how much joy those guys bring me? The funny and the love, it's all delicious. Mmm.

Jaime and I caught up on Bullshit! tonight. The Mayan calendar episode felt like it was spooled right out of our conjoined mind, so needless to say, we greatly enjoyed it. The lie detectors one was excellent as well. I now know a trick to beat a lie detector. Not sure when that'll come in handy, and I'm kind of hoping I never have the chance to test it, but I do know. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. Aaaaanyway, after the episode ended, I proceeded to grill Jaime polygraph-style on his past "encounters". It got weird ).

He actually said, "Yeah, I guess you're right about that." I marathoned awesome yesterday. AD/BC, all of Nathan Barley, and then a rewatch of Sweet. Jaime was with me for most of it, though the Sweet-watching was surreptitious and on headphones to avoid him wincing at naked Noel. Anyway, thoughts!

AD/BC - fucking hilarious. Even better if you're a fan of Jesus Christ Superstar. It includes the line, "Time is like a menstruous woman," which made me laugh so hard my hearing went fuzzy. A solid A.

Nathan Barley - great, for the most part. I know Jones is only in it for a total of five minutes or so, but I love him, and the Dan vs. Nathan tension was often very funny. It dragged a bit for me at points, but overall, I enjoyed it. It's a bit dark and a bit mean. Neither of those bother me; just figured I'd give fair warning. I'll call it a B.

Sweet - what can I say? Naked Noel, bizarre plot, much hilarity, and canon slash. It. Is. GLORIOUS. A+, my friends. A+.

Also, Jaime flat-ironed my hair for me last night. He remarked that it looked Naboo-ish (the length is spot-on), so I called him Bollo for a while. Now, the natural curl is fighting back, and it has a Selphie flip at the bottom. I love it.

Woke up at 7:30am (after going to bed at 4:30am because sleep and I have a dysfunctional relationship) so Jaime and I could get to Moffitt before 10:30. We were making really good time, too, like half an hour ahead, but then we hit traffic that ended up making us fifteen minutes late. Turned out there had been a horrible wreck - it broke my heart a little bit. A large truck, one that Jaime said looked like the type used for fruit transportation, was lodged deep in a ditch by the side of the road. The cabin was practically non-existent. I don't think there's any way the driver made it out of that alive. The odd feeling that settled in my stomach at that kind of stuck around the rest of the way to Moffitt. I let go of it eventually, though; I've had plenty of memento mori moments in the past year. Just another one to file away.

Moffitt was astoundingly boring. We were there for a follow-up with the neurology clinic after all of Jaime's January drama. The day started off with an MRI, during which I called my mom and jabbered for an hour. That was nice. I tend to avoid socializing a fair amount, but every once in a while, I get reminded of how pleasant it can be. Anyway, after that we went to the neurology clinic, where we sat for over an hour in the waiting room. I'm not kidding, not exaggerating even a hair. We got to Moffitt for an MRI and what should've been a quick appointment at 10:45am, and we didn't get to leave until 2:15pm. Fucking ridiculous. I forgave them pretty quickly, though. Jaime's MRI came back beautiful. No further appointments necessary. The only ties he has left to this are the scans he has to get every few months. Other than that? Free.

It was in good spirits (and with empty stomachs) that we went to International Plaza after that. That's one of the coolest malls I've ever been in. Got food, wandered around - saw a kind of amazing store packed full of accessories called GLAM that I will ransack once I have an income - would've gotten something done at Sephora if I hadn't been getting tired and Jaime flagging even more, and bounded with my last burst of energy like a giddy child into Lush. My goal? See the mythical Goth Juice, of course! I was even giddy enough to play along and try out their salt and sugar scrub demos. They have a deal going right now where you can put together a little box of hair product samples for $15, and Jaime was kind enough to not only get me that, but also a little hemisphere of solid sugar scrub. So! Now I have a tiny jar of Goth Juice to try out and cuddle and watch Boosh with. Victory!

Speaking of Boosh, I was flitting about YouTube (watching some amazing clips like this one) and got inspired to look for Nathan Barley again. It took me all of five minutes to find the whole series. I'm not sure how I fucked up my searching so bad last time. I found AD/BC as well, which I'm psyched about. Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade musical with Julian Barratt and a tiny bit of Noel Fielding - how can you go wrong?!

Aaaaanyway. After that whole day, we came home and crashed. I woke up just after 11pm. I freaking slept through SYTYCD and The Fashion Show. So, I watched Top Gear until the repeat of TFS came on, then found SYTYCD clips online to catch up. And oh my gosh, was there a lot to catch up on. )

As far as TFS goes, I don't feel like cutting for two sentences, so I'll just say this without spoilers: My favorite made the final four. I know where my vote's going. :D

So since I napped for a couple hours, I couldn't sleep. :\ Hence, this entry! And now, with Placebo in my headphones and my Lush goodies waiting for me to play with them in the morning, I think I might be able to catch a few more hours. Ought to at least try, I suppose.
